midway along life’s journey
my mind had gone astray
upon the straight and certain path
i could no longer stay

i found myself on the ridge
shadowed, harsh, and bare
so rank and steep the passage
its memory breeds despair

no death could be more bitter
than that forsaken place
but since it led me to truth

i’ll speak of what took place
