Bodhi and Resist Not Evil continue walking within the Hills of Hope until they arrive at the Gnostic Stone surrounded by several lambs, who look up from their focused discussion. Resist Not Evil addresses them, excitedly:
lamb of god lives
from thou shalt, saved
by this mountain lion
from hatred enslaved
Resist Not Evil turns toward a lamb and says:
but before bodhi explains
what happened on the stone
please tell him beyond belief
what of lamb of god is known
Beyond Belief responds to Bodhi:
our gnostic gospels
reject divine hate
hidden by holy trinity
sealing the church’s fate
She touches the Gnostic Stone and continues:
peasant boys were digging
ages ago around this stone
a jar they discovered
true teachings made known
smashing it open
they found secret books
heretical jesus writings
that escaped palace hooks
they taught to know yourself
understand through insight
through knowing we find god
in all that shines with light
Another sheep continues:
my name is quaker
no steeple marks my way
the light within each soul
outshines what priests may say
i walked through courts and kings
refused their hat and throne
for truth needs no decree
it speaks from self alone
be still and you will hear
no thunder from above
the voice that needs no name
and answers only love
A final sheep steps forward and addresses Bodhi:
i am the sage of concord
trust what stirs inside
no borrowed voice is truth
no need for outer guide
imitation is a chain
that binds the timid mind
self-reliant hearts
leave hollow forms behind
the soul becomes its law
when fear is cast away
no scripture stands above
the truth you live today
Zarathustra sneaks in from the hills and addresses them, dismissively:
you speak of heaven as
a condition of the heart
not bliss after death
together not apart
but don’t be so pleased
grazers of this knoll
you lambs sustain
their hatred and control
you shield the flock
those who cannot see
their fear becomes a creed
that blinds both you and me
you protect
intolerant sheep
fundamentalists
lamb of god does weep
A dust storm suddenly starts moving down from the ridge. Zarathustra concludes:
we can continue later
as our common foe
i last saw at the ridge
his shadow does grow
